Chaguanas Mayor Announces Development of Transport Hub, Vendor Relocation Deadline

“The area formerly occupied by the old Chaguanas Health Facility has been identified for the development of a proper, structured transport hub. This is not a random decision. It is part of a broader plan to improve traffic flow, public safety, commuter comfort, and economic activity within our Borough.” This from Mayor of Chaguanas His Worship Councillor Faaiq Mohammed.

In a Media Release today (Friday 27th February, 2026), the Mayor said, “Chaguanas is growing. And with growth comes responsibility. We cannot continue to operate in a way that creates congestion, disorder, and long term risk. We must plan properly, build properly, and manage our space properly. Let me also make the timeline clear. Vendors operating in that area have been formally notified and have until March 31st to remove their structures and relocate. Demolition will commence immediately after that date. This process is defined, it is orderly, and it will proceed.”

According to Mohammed, “At the same time, let me be very clear. The vendors who operated in that space are not being abandoned. They are not being pushed aside. They have been offered booths at the Chaguanas Market, with six (6) months rent free. That is a structured, fair, and supportive transition package. It provides stability. It provides opportunity. It provides time. No one can reasonably say that this Corporation acted without compassion.”

He added, “I understand that some will say we do not care about the poor. That is simply not true. Caring does not mean allowing disorder. Caring does not mean ignoring regulations. Caring means creating sustainable systems that protect everyone, including those trying to earn an honest living. Leadership requires difficult decisions. It requires balancing individual interest with the greater good. It requires thinking beyond today and building for tomorrow. There will be resistance. Some will oppose change simply because it is change. Some will resist lawful structure. Some may attempt to politicize the issue. That is expected. But we will not be distracted, and we will not be deterred.”

The Media Release concluded by saying, “Our duty is to the entire Borough of Chaguanas. To the commuters. To the business owners. To the residents. To the vendors. To the next generation who will inherit the town we shape today. We are building a Chaguanas that works for everyone. A Chaguanas that is orderly, safe, progressive, and economically vibrant. History will not judge us by the noise of the moment. It will judge us by whether we had the courage to act responsibly. And we do.”

More on this as it becomes available.
