Father And 11-Month-Old Son Shot Dead In Brutal St. James Attack — Police Investigating

UPDATE (01/04/26): Family members said little Jayden had just begun to walk and loved watching children’s programmes, bringing joy to those around him. Meanwhile, residents remain shaken, recalling the child as playful and full of life.

Officers from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI) Region I returned to the area following the incident, combing through nearby tracks and pathways the gunman may have used, in search of clues as they continue their investigations into the double homicide.

A man and his infant son are dead following a brutal shooting incident in Dundonald Hill, St. James, early this morning (Tuesday 31st March, 2026). The deceased have been identified as 25-year-old Joseph Sutton and his 11-month-old son, Jayden Sutton. Joseph, a small mini-mart owner, is said to have survived a shooting incident just two (2) weeks ago.

According to reports, Joseph and Jayden were asleep at their home when their pet dog began barking, around 1:00 AM. Upon checking on the disturbance, a relative saw a gunman pushing a firearm through a bedroom window. The suspect opened fire, hitting both father and son before fleeing on foot.

Joseph’s father, Magnus Sutton, said he heard the dogs barking followed by gunshots. He also believed the attackers damaged a nearby T&TEC light to avoid being seen during their escape.

Police and Emergency Health Services were notified.

Both wounded victims were conveyed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital (POSGH) by relatives, where they were subsequently pronounced dead.

Jayden’s mother, Leona Allen, is now making funeral arrangements for both her child and her common-law husband, instead of making preparations for Jayden’s first birthday.

Speaking at the Forensic Science Centre, Allen said Joseph was shot on 16th March, 2026 and had recently been discharged from Hospital. She said she believed he may have been targeted out of envy over his small mini-mart business.

During that incident, Joseph and another man, identified as 27-year-old Ronaldo Amoroso, were wounded at Upper Dundonald Hill. Investigators believe a dispute among a group of men escalated, leading to gunfire that left both men wounded.

Police are looking into the possible link between both shooting incidents.

Allen said the family previously discussed leaving Dundonald Hill as they felt their lives were in danger.

Investigations are continuing into the double murder.

More on this as it becomes available.
