84-Year-Old Woman Perishes In Laventille House Fire — 2 Children Escape Unharmed

An elderly woman is dead following a fire at her home in Laventille on Thursday night (2nd April, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 84-year-old Elise Morris of Robinson Lane, Success Village, Laventille.

According to reports, Morris, who used a wheelchair, was on the upper floor of her two-storey home, when the house caught fire, around 8:26 PM. 

Neighbours alerted the Fire Service as two (2) children, aged three (3) and ten (10), managed to safely escape the home.

Fire Officers from the Wrightson Road and Morvant Fire Stations responded to the scene, where the house was already engulfed in flames, and subsequently extinguished the blaze. Officers from Headquarters North also assisted.

Morris’s body was later found on the ground floor in the South-Western section of the lower storey. Investigators suspect she may have fallen after the floor of the upstairs bedroom collapsed during the fire.


The two-storey house, which had four (4) bedrooms, was not supplied with electricity and was reportedly lit mainly using candles.

However, officials have not determined the exact cause of the fire.

Damage to the home has been estimated at approximately $700,000.

Other occupants of the house were identified as 42-year-old Alicia Morris and 28-year-old Dario De Gannes.

Investigations are continuing by Officers of the Port-of-Spain CID and the Homicide Bureau of Investigations (HBI) Region I.

UPDATE (18/04/26): A post-mortem examination conducted at the Forensic Science Centre on Friday (17th April, 2026) revealed that Frederick Aaron Stevenson died from blunt force trauma to the head, with investigators alleging he was killed with a sledgehammer before his body was dumped in a forested area off Esmeralda Road, Las Lomas. UPDATE (24/04/26): The Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago announced this morning (Friday 24th April, 2026) that the relocation of domestic operations, scheduled to begin from today, has been postponed until further notice. According to the Authority, “The planned redirection of domestic passengers through international checkpoints will not take effect at this time. We appreciate the continued co-operation of our stakeholders and the public as preparations continue.” All domestic passengers will therefore continue to be processed through the Domestic Departures area on the ground floor of the Piarco International Airport, with standard check-in and security procedures remaining in place. A woman was found dead at her apartment in Cunupia on Friday evening (17th April, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Anna Lalla, a self-employed hairdresser.
