38-Year-Old Diego Martin Woman Pleads ‘Not Guilty’ To Assaulting Police Officer With Vehicle

A woman was granted bail with surety in the sum of $80,000 after she appeared before a Master of the High Court, charged with assaulting a Police Officer. 

In a Media Release today (Thursday 28th May, 2026), the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said Katrianna Rezende, 38, of Diego Martin, was also charged with disorderly behaviour, resisting arrest, dangerous driving and careless driving, when she appeared before Master Lisa Singh-Phillip, in the Arima High Court, on Wednesday (27th May, 2026).

She pleaded not guilty to all charges and was granted $80,000 bail to cover the charge of assaulting a Police Officer and $60,000 bail to cover the other offences. 

The matter was adjourned to 24th June, 2026.

The accused was also ordered to report to the Four Roads Police Station once per month between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM. 

The TTPS said Officers of the Arima Traffic Department were on patrol along Sorzano Street, Arima, when they observed a heavily tinted motor vehicle parked in a “No Parking Zone.” The female driver was informed of the traffic violation and issued a Fixed Penalty Notice for “Failure To Comply with the Permissible Visible Light Transmittance of Material on Windscreen or Windows of Motor Vehicle.”

According to the TTPS, “The Officers then instructed the driver to remove the vehicle from the No Parking Zone and she refused. The Officers then requested her driving documents and she also refused to comply. She started her vehicle and attempted to drive off. In doing so, the vehicle came into contact with two (2) Officers, PC Phillips and WPC Hamid. WPC Hamid reported experiencing a burning sensation in her right foot and believing her life was in imminent danger, removed her firearm from her holster and pointed it in a downward direction. The driver subsequently reversed the vehicle. In attempting to re-holster the firearm, WPC Hamid’s finger inadvertently touched the trigger and discharged one (1) round of ammunition.”

WPC Hamid and PC Phillips later sought medical attention at the Arima Health Facility. 

The accused’s husband, Manuel Rezende, 39, also of Diego Martin, was also arrested by Officers for disorderly behaviour and obscene language, arising out of the incident.

He appeared before Magistrate Ali in the Arima Magistrates’ Court, also on Wednesday (27th May, 2026), and was granted bail in the sum of $30,000. 

The matter was adjourned to 30th November, 2026. 

Katrianna was charged by W/Sgt. Porter and WPC Hamid, while Manuel was charged by PC Phillips, all of the Arima Traffic Unit. 

The Media Release concluded by saying, “Investigations are ongoing into this incident in accordance with Standing Order 41 of the Police Service Act, Section 16 (2).”
