Customs Officers Seize Nearly TT $6M In Marijuana From British National At Piarco Airport

The Customs and Excise Division said it successfully intercepted a passenger attempting to smuggle marijuana into Trinidad and Tobago through the Piarco International Airport on Sunday (17th May, 2026).

According to the Division in a Media Release today (Monday 18th May, 2026), “During routine passenger clearance operations, Customs Officers at the Airport referred a 22-year-old British national to the Red Line for further examination of their luggage. During the examination, Officers discovered a quantity of plant-like material concealed within the passenger’s baggage. Officers attached to the Preventive Branch were subsequently contacted and responded to the scene, where field testing confirmed the substance to be marijuana. The estimated street value of the seizure is TT $5,996,295.80.”

The Division said it “remains engaged with partner agencies within the National Security Network as the investigation progresses. The matter is being pursued under the Customs Act, Chapter 78:01, and charges are expected to follow relating to the importation of prohibited goods. This interception highlights the continued vigilance and proactive enforcement efforts of the Customs and Excise Division in safeguarding the borders of Trinidad and Tobago. Through intelligence-led operations and strategic enforcement initiatives, Officers remain committed to detecting and preventing the importation of illegal narcotics.”

The Media Release concluded by saying, “The Customs and Excise Division reaffirms its commitment to enforcing the laws of Trinidad and Tobago, protecting national security and revenue, and maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.”
