UPDATE (31/05/26): UNC Freeport/Chickland Councillor Anil Baliram is no longer on a ventilator and is now breathing on his own with oxygen assistance, according to authorities at the San Fernando General Hospital. It is unknown at this time whether the Councillor will experience any long-term effects following the incident a week ago at his Couva home.

UPDATE (26/05/26): UNC Freeport/Chickland Councillor Anil Baliram remains hospitalized, surrounded by family and friends who are offering continuous prayers for his recovery. Baliram has been warded at the San Fernando General Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since Sunday morning (24th May, 2026), following a suspected attempt to take his life at his Couva home.

Baliram’s condition on Monday (25th May, 2026) was described as “still delicate.” He was visited by his wife, siblings, mother-in-law and his pundit. Also at the Hospital were Chairman of the Couva Tabaquite Talparo Regional Corporation, Ryan Rampersad, Vice Chairman Henry Awong, as well as several Councillors and Caroni Central constituency officials.

Caroni Central MP David Lee said Baliram was receiving the best care possible. “I’ve spoken to Health Minister Dr. Lackram Bodoe on the situation and he’s in constant touch on what is going on. Anil and his family remain in the prayers of myself and the entire party. His burgesses are deeply sad. He’s always been very down-to-earth, always fighting for them, and they want to fight for him with their prayers.”

Lee said an interfaith service will be held for Baliram at 11:00 AM today (Tuesday 26th May, 2026) at Caroni Central’s constituency office.

A United National Congress (UNC) Freeport/Chickland Councillor is currently hospitalized, fighting for his life, after an apparent suicide attempt at his home in Couva this morning (Sunday 24th May, 2026). He has been identified as Anil Baliram of Watson Court, Exchange, Couva.

According to reports, Police Officers attached to the Couva Police Station responded to a report at Baliram’s residence, where they found Emergency Health Services personnel already performing CPR on the Councillor, around 8:30 AM. Baliram showed faint signs of life moments later as Officers and EHS personnel worked frantically to stabilize him at the scene before rushing him to the Couva District Health Facility. He was later transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital for further medical treatment.

Investigators reportedly discovered a red, yellow and black bungee cord tied to an inner ceiling beam inside the house, along with a ladder nearby.

Further reports state that a passer-by rushed into the house after hearing Baliram’s wife screaming for help, and cut the cord in an effort to save him.

Officers PC Sonnylal and PC Coombs were among the first responders at the scene.

Investigations are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
