Couva Police Officer Charged With Possession of Ammunition

UPDATE (27/08/26): PC Avinash Kussie, 35, of Chaguanas, was granted $80,000 bail when he appeared virtually before Master Whitney Franklin at the Master Court South C on Wednesday (26th August, 2026). His Defence Attorney, Shiva Boodoo, requested reasonable bail, noting that Kussie is married and the father of four (4). Prosecutor Cpl. Sookoo did not object to bail, citing Kussie’s clean record.

Kussie has been a Police Officer for the past two (2) years and was last attached to the Couva Police Station.

According to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), a Police Officer has been charged with possession of ammunition following an intelligence-led operation conducted by Officers of the Central Division. He has been identified as PC Avinash Kussie from the Couva Police Station.

The operation was led by DCP Suzette Martin and ACP Remy, spearheaded by Superintendent Glodon and supervised by ASP Mark Hernandez. Field operations were conducted by members of the Central Division Operations Unit and Central Division Task Force, Area South.

In a Media Release on Tuesday (25th August, 2026), the TTPS said at approximately 7:45 PM on Monday 17th August, 2026, Officers, acting on intelligence from an external intelligence agency, proceeded to the Southern Main Road, Couva, where they intercepted a black Nissan Sylphy motor vehicle. 

The occupant was identified as PC Avinash Kussie, attached to the Couva Police Station, who was off-duty at the time.

During the exercise, Officers allegedly found a black plastic bag containing ten (10) rounds of 9mm ammunition. PC Kussie was detained and conveyed to the Chaguanas Police Station. 

The ammunition was subsequently marked, photographed and properly packaged for evidential purposes. The vehicle was also secured for further examination.

As part of the investigation, searches were conducted at the Officer’s residence and his locker at the Couva Police Station. Nothing illegal was found during those searches.

Further enquiries were conducted by PC Hosien, under the supervision of W/Cpl. Mohan. 

Following consultation with the Division’s Legal Adviser, an investigation file was submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on Monday (24th August, 2026) for advice and guidance.

The following day, on Tuesday (25th August, 2026), instructions were received from the Office of the DPP to prefer a charge against PC Kussie for the offence of possession of ammunition.

The TTPS said it “wishes to state unequivocally that no Officer is exempt from the laws he or she is sworn to uphold. Where a member of this organization is alleged to have breached the law, that member will be investigated, charged, and made to face the full weight of the judicial process, with the same rigour, and without exception, applied to any other citizen.”

The Media Release concluded by saying, “The integrity of the Police Service depends on the public's confidence that the badge is not a shield against accountability. The TTPS will not tolerate criminal conduct by its Officers, and will continue to utilize all resources to investigate misconduct wherever it is found.”

Prime Minister the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC, MP, has responded to several acts of violence which were recorded and shared across social media over the long Independence Day weekend. 22-Year-Old Man Shot Dead In Morvant — Face Disfigured In Hail of Bullets

A man is dead following a brutal shooting incident in Morvant early this morning (Tuesday 8th September, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Tylan Hinkson, aka “Papa,”of Redwood Street, Morvant. His face was said to have been disfigured in a hail of bullets from a high-powered weapon. According to reports, Hinkson was ambushed and shot near Second Caledonia Road, in the vicinity of Juman, during the early morning hours. Police and Emergency Health Services were notified and responded to the scene. Upon arrival, Officers found Hinkson lying on the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds about the body, including severe injuries to his face, hands and legs. A District Medical Officer (DMO) was summoned, who pronounced Hinkson dead at the scene. Police have not yet established a motive for this murder. 19-Year-Old Driver Dies In Cocorite Crash — Passenger Hospitalized

A man is dead and another listed in serious condition at Hospital following a horrific road traffic accident in Cocorite on Wednesday night (9th September, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 19-year-old Binyameen Rahaman of Warren Road, Cunupia. Missing Elderly Man Found Dead Under Suitcases At House In Curepe — Police Investigating

The body of a missing pensioner was found under large suitcases at a house in Curepe on Monday afternoon (7th September, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 75-year-old Chunilal Bandoo of Mohammed Lane, Mc Inroy Street, Curepe. He was the father of a daughter, who resides in the United States. 36-Year-Old Carapichaima Man Shot Dead By Police — Mother, Brother Detained; Guns Seized

A man wanted for extortion is dead following a Police-involved shooting incident in Carapichaima early Thursday morning (10th September, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 36-year-old Riyad Sean Ali of Orangefield Settlement, Carapichaima. His elderly mother and brother were reportedly detained and firearms seized at the scene. BODY of Woman Found Inside Abandoned Security Booth In San Fernando — Police Investigating

The decomposing body of a woman was found inside an abandoned security booth on the compound of an old panyard in San Fernando on Wednesday morning (16th September, 2026). While unconfirmed, the deceased is believed to be Marcia Thomas Singh, who residents said appeared to be in her 60s. She had been apparently residing in the security booth for some time. A man is dead following a shooting incident in Morvant early Thursday morning (10th September, 2026) — bringing the number of people killed in Morvant since Tuesday (8th September, 2026) to four (4).
