Education Ministry Advances Processing of 45,953 School Supplies And Book Grant Applications

The Ministry of Education is advising the public that the initial review of all 45,953 applications received for the 2026 School Supplies and Book Grant has been completed. The Ministry said it is now undertaking the necessary final verification checks to confirm eligibility and ensure that the available assistance is directed to the most vulnerable applicants.

In a Media Release on Thursday (27th August, 2026) the Ministry said it expects to have completed final verification for approximately 10,000 applications by Friday (28th August, 2026). Final verification of the remaining applications is expected to be completed by Wednesday 2nd September, 2026.

The Ministry notes that these final verification checks are “essential to maintaining the integrity of the programme, safeguarding public funds and ensuring that assistance is directed to eligible applicants who are most vulnerable.”

Payments to successful applicants are expected to begin by Wednesday 2nd September, 2026.

According to the Ministry, “The 2026 programme received 45,953 applications from students across approximately 668 schools and educational institutions, including Government and Government-assisted Primary and Secondary schools, Government-sponsored Private Secondary schools, Special Education Institutions, and SERVOL Junior Life Centres. The Ministry is therefore processing a significantly larger number of applications than under previous grant disbursement exercises, within a shorter implementation timeframe. The application period opened on 22nd June, 2026 and concluded on 11th July, 2026.”

Priority consideration will be applied in the following order:

  1. Unemployed applicants.
  2. Applicants from low-income households.
  3. Applicants from families with multiple dependents.
  4. Applicants with children with special needs.
  5. Applicants who receive Government assistance.

The public is reminded that the amount payable to successful applicants is based on the student’s class level during the 2025/2026 academic year, as follows:

  • $1,000 - Infant 1 to Standard 5 students.
  • $500 - Students entering Form 2 in September 2026 (Form 1 students during the 2025/2026 academic year).
  • $1,000 - Form 1 and Form 3 to Upper 6 students.

The $500 allocation for students entering Form 2 considers the Ministry’s provision of six (6) books with embedded learning support, designed for use with their laptops.

Parents and guardians can monitor the status of their applications through the online portal at bookgrant.moe.gov.tt. Applicants will also receive email notifications with updates on their application status and payment information.

The Media Release concluded by saying, “The Ministry of Education recognizes the importance of the School Supplies and Book Grant to families as they prepare for the new academic year, and remains committed to progressing the verification and payment process as efficiently as possible. Further information on the distribution of cheques and other relevant updates will be communicated via the Ministry of Education’s official channels as the process continues.”

Prime Minister the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC, MP, has responded to several acts of violence which were recorded and shared across social media over the long Independence Day weekend. 22-Year-Old Man Shot Dead In Morvant — Face Disfigured In Hail of Bullets

A man is dead following a brutal shooting incident in Morvant early this morning (Tuesday 8th September, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Tylan Hinkson, aka “Papa,”of Redwood Street, Morvant. His face was said to have been disfigured in a hail of bullets from a high-powered weapon. According to reports, Hinkson was ambushed and shot near Second Caledonia Road, in the vicinity of Juman, during the early morning hours. Police and Emergency Health Services were notified and responded to the scene. Upon arrival, Officers found Hinkson lying on the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds about the body, including severe injuries to his face, hands and legs. A District Medical Officer (DMO) was summoned, who pronounced Hinkson dead at the scene. Police have not yet established a motive for this murder. 19-Year-Old Driver Dies In Cocorite Crash — Passenger Hospitalized

A man is dead and another listed in serious condition at Hospital following a horrific road traffic accident in Cocorite on Wednesday night (9th September, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 19-year-old Binyameen Rahaman of Warren Road, Cunupia. According to reports, Rahaman was driving a white Nissan AD wagon, heading West along the Western Main Road with a passenger later identified as 21-year-old Faraaz Hosein of Hosein Drive, St. Lucien Road, Diego Martin. Missing Elderly Man Found Dead Under Suitcases At House In Curepe — Police Investigating

The body of a missing pensioner was found under large suitcases at a house in Curepe on Monday afternoon (7th September, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 75-year-old Chunilal Bandoo of Mohammed Lane, Mc Inroy Street, Curepe. He was the father of a daughter, who resides in the United States. According to reports, Bandoo was last seen near his home on Saturday (5th September, 2026) while liming with friends for several hours. However, he never returned home afterwards. A man wanted for extortion is dead following a Police-involved shooting incident in Carapichaima early Thursday morning (10th September, 2026). The deceased has been identified as 36-year-old Riyad Sean Ali of Orangefield Settlement, Carapichaima. His elderly mother and brother were reportedly detained and firearms seized at the scene. BODY of Woman Found Inside Abandoned Security Booth In San Fernando — Police Investigating

The decomposing body of a woman was found inside an abandoned security booth on the compound of an old panyard in San Fernando on Wednesday morning (16th September, 2026). While unconfirmed, the deceased is believed to be Marcia Thomas Singh, who residents said appeared to be in her 60s. She had been apparently residing in the security booth for some time. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is seeking the urgent assistance of the public to find a missing mother and her infant son. 21-Year-Old Man Shot Dead In Morvant — Fourth Killing Since Tuesday

A man is dead following a shooting incident in Morvant early Thursday morning (10th September, 2026) — bringing the number of people killed in Morvant since Tuesday (8th September, 2026) to four (4).
