TTPS Urges Public To Beware of Fraudulent Speeding Scam Via SMS
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is advising members of the public to be vigilant following reports of a fraudulent text message scam, in which recipients are urged to click a link to pay an alleged speeding fine.
In a Media Release today (Wednesday 5th August, 2026), the TTPS said the scam message “falsely claims to have been sent by the Traffic Enforcement Branch of the TTPS and states that the recipient’s vehicle was detected speeding by a speed enforcement system. It then instructs the recipient to make payment through an online link.”
The TTPS said it “wishes to make it clear that these messages are fraudulent and are not being sent by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.”
Members of the public are urged to look out for common signs of online scams, including:
- Suspicious website addresses: Be cautious of links with uncommon or misspelled domain names. For example, a website ending in .cam instead of .com.
- Pressure to act quickly: Scammers often impose short deadlines, such as demanding payment within three (3) days, to create a sense of urgency.
- Unofficial communication channels: Official Government of Trinidad and Tobago correspondence will originate from authorized Government email addresses ending in .gov.tt.
The TTPS is advising members of the public “not to click on suspicious links, provide personal or financial information, or make payments in response to unsolicited messages.”
If you suspect that you or someone you know has been a victim of this scam, contact the TTPS Fraud Squad at 612-2470, ext. 15020 (POS), 40150 (South), or via email: fraud@ttps.gov.tt.
