“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Trinidad and Tobago’s Calypso icon, Slinger Francisco, known to the world as “The Mighty Sparrow.” He was 91 years old.
He was an institution in the entertainment industry, well admired for his skill and finesse as a singer, songwriter and mentor; beloved by many. He was also a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, life partner and friend.
He died peacefully surrounded by family on September 27, 2026 where he succumbed from a brief illness in New York. We thank everyone for their well wishes and for allowing the family to grieve privately at this most difficult time.”
Following the news today, Prime Minister the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC, MP, issued the following statement:
“Today, our nation mourns the loss of an icon whose legacy will forever live in the hearts of all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
Sparrow was a true patriot and revered ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago’s culture. Through his music, his wit and his unmatched contribution to culture, he carried the spirit and stories of our people across the world.
For decades, Sparrow has been part of the soundtrack of Trinidad and Tobago. His music made us laugh, made us think and made us proud of who we are.
On behalf of the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago, I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.
Rest in peace, Mighty Sparrow. Your voice will live on forever.”
Born in Grand Roy, Grenada, in 1935 and raised in Trinidad and Tobago from infancy, Sparrow rose to prominence in the 1950s with his distinctive voice, quick wit, energetic performances and fearless songwriting. His career spanned more than seven (7) decades, during which he became known as the “Calypso King of the World” and won T&T’s Calypso King/Monarch title and Road March competition eight (8) times each.
Through classics such as Jean and Dinah, Dan Is the Man, Congo Man, Saltfish, Melda (Obeah Wedding) and countless others, Sparrow turned calypso into a powerful vehicle for humour, social commentary, politics, culture and the everyday experiences of Caribbean people. His influence extended far beyond Trinidad and Tobago, helping introduce generations of listeners around the world to the richness of calypso and Caribbean culture.
For Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean, the passing of “The Mighty Sparrow” represents the loss of a towering cultural figure whose voice became inseparable from the story of calypso itself.
