Pedestrian Struck Dead By Toyota Hilux — Drunken 40-Year-Old Sangre Grande Driver Arrested
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is warning motorists against drinking and driving following a fatal road traffic accident along Guaico Tamana Road last Friday night (18th September, 2026).
According to the TTPS, around 10:00 PM, Eastern Division Officers responded to a road traffic accident involving a Toyota Hilux, which struck a male pedestrian.
The pedestrian was thrown into a drain on the left side of the roadway and suffered fatal injuries.
Responding Officers detected the scent of alcohol on the driver, a 40-year-old Sangre Grande man, and administered a breathalyzer test, which he failed. He was immediately arrested and charged.
Officers are continuing efforts to identify the deceased.
Senior Superintendent Lincoln Daly, head of the TTPS Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch, is meanwhile warning drivers to cease and desist from irresponsible behaviour involving the consumption of alcohol and driving.
He disclosed that twenty-two (22) drivers were arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI) offences last weekend, as Police continue to improve public safety through Operation Watchtower, which involves DUI detection exercises targeting drunk drivers.
“This is unacceptable as it places unnecessary risk to all road users. We have no issue with persons having a drink or two, as the law allows a limit of thirty-five (35) microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath for a driver. However, drivers need to be more responsible in their consumption behaviours and decision-making. Officers are far too often arresting drivers with alcohol levels as much as three (3) and four (4) times in excess of the legal limit. We want persons to return home to their families, and drinking and driving can lead to unintentional tragedies on the roads for all involved,” Senior Superintendent Daly said.
Motorists are reminded that DUI fines have increased substantially, with a first-time offence carrying a fine of up to $24,000 and a second offence carrying a fine of up to $45,000.
The TTPS notes that for 2026 so far, sixty-four (64) persons have lost their lives on the nation’s roads, compared to ninety-two (92) for the same period last year, representing a 30% decrease.
