Reports: Explosion, Fire At RRM Plaza On High Street, San Fernando

UPDATE 2: Owner of RRM Plaza and President of the Greater San Fernando Chamber of Commerce, Kiran Singh, said the blast on Monday (21st September, 2026) occurred after concerns were raised about a possible gas leak at the plaza about a week and a half earlier.

Singh said a gas scent had been detected in the Food Court, prompting an emergency call to Ramco, which attended the premises and addressed the problem. He said, however, that no gas odour had been detected after that intervention. The gas company was called again following the explosion to ensure the gas supply to the building was shut off. Singh said there had also been activity involving the gas supply before the explosion, but stressed that it was too early to determine whether this was connected to the incident.

While speculation circulated that the explosion could have been deliberate, Singh said he was not aware of any disgruntled employees who could have been responsible. He declined to speculate on the cause, saying that responsibility rested with investigators.

Singh said he could not yet provide an estimate of the damage or say how many businesses or workers had been affected. He said the closure would result in loss of income for businesses and their employees until the building was declared safe.

Singh added that his immediate priority was to have the investigation completed, gain access to the building, begin repairs and restore operations. “We are hoping that by the end of the week, it’s operational,” he said.

UPDATE: The explosion originated at Skyline Bar at RRM Plaza and not the Food Court as was initially reported. The force of the explosion sent dangerous shards of glass and debris crashing through the building and onto the busy High Street below, causing significant damage to a vehicle. Owner of the mall and President of the Greater San Fernando Chamber of Commerce, Kiran Singh, said the blast occurred around 5:00 PM and left one (1) person injured.

Among those caught in the chaos was tattoo artist Shiva Ramlal, who was working with a client when the explosion happened.

Investigations are continuing into the incident.

According to reports, a gas explosion triggered a fire a short while ago this afternoon (Monday 21st September, 2026) at RRM Plaza on High Street, San Fernando. The explosion may have occurred in the Food Court section of the large 6-floor shopping mall.

Police and Fire Services are currently at the scene.

It is unknown at this time whether anyone was injured in the blast or subsequent blaze.
