Prime Minister: Murder Toll Down 46% Since October 2024
Prime Minister the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, SC, MP, said the country is seeing “real progress” in the fight against violent crime.
In a social media post this afternoon (Thursday 29th October, 2026), the Prime Minister said the numbers show a decline from 523 murders for the year as of 28th October, 2024, to 305 during the same period in 2025 and now to 280 as of 28th October, 2026 — a reduction of approximately 46%. “Your UNC Government has placed a strong emphasis on confronting violent criminal elements, strengthening national security and restoring public safety. From legislative changes to resourcing and equipping our protective services, we have ensured that our brave men and women are not outmanned or outgunned on the streets.”
Mrs. Persad-Bissessar added, “There is still much work to be done. Every life lost to crime is one too many, and our commitment must remain focused on making our communities safer. I extend our appreciation to the Ministers of Homeland Security and Defence, Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro, and the brave men and women of our protective services for their continued dedication and sacrifice.”
The Prime Minister’s statement concluded by saying, “The work continues. The safety of our citizens remains the priority.”
