TWO (2) Men Shot Dead By Police In Buccoo, Tobago; Officer Wounded
UPDATE (11/10/26): The second person killed during the Police-involved shooting in Tobago is believed to be a man from Toco, Trinidad, although his body has not yet been formally identified by relatives.
Two (2) men are dead and a Police Officer wounded following a Police-involved shooting incident in Buccoo, Tobago, on Wednesday night (7th October, 2026). One of the deceased has so far been identified as 24-year-old Jamal Clarke, also known as “Shilo.” A female witness alleges the suspects were shooting at the Officers.
According to reports, Officers intercepted a silver Toyota Aqua along Golden Grove Road, Buccoo, while acting on intelligence, around 7:00 PM. However, the vehicle’s occupants allegedly opened fire on the Officers, prompting them to return fire in the suspect's direction, striking both men in the process. An Officer was also wounded during the rapid exchange of gunfire.
One suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second was taken to the Scarborough General Hospital in critical condition. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries. The wounded Officer, meanwhile, is currently receiving medical treatment at the said Hospital.
The incident marks Tobago’s first fatal Police-involved shooting of 2026.
A woman allegedly witnessed the moments leading to the fatal exchange of gunfire. She was returning from dropping off her daughter at netball practice, when she found herself caught in the middle of the deadly Police operation in Buccoo.
The woman, who was driving along Golden Grove Road in the vicinity of a bridge, said she saw an unmarked white SUV stop ahead of her before two (2) men armed approached a silver Toyota Aqua. The woman said she initially stopped because she thought it was a possible robbery in progress. “The way they approach the Aqua, I realize that it’s Police,” she recalled.
According to the woman, the situation quickly escalated when the occupants of the silver car began reversing after their path was blocked near the bridge. She said she moved her vehicle to the extreme left of the road and onto a small incline because she feared the reversing vehicles could collide with other road users.
“As they pass me, I'm going to see to go around the corner, like a vehicle come around the corner and block them,” she said.
The woman said gunshots rang out shortly after the silver Aqua was blocked. “When they realize they get blocked, I just start to hear shots ringing out,” she recalled.
Fearing for her safety and that of a male passenger in her vehicle, she said she pushed him down and told him to lie flat before ducking near the steering wheel. The woman said she then saw Police Officers moving towards the vehicles as gunfire continued.
She alleged that the occupants of the Aqua were also firing shots, describing how one of the men appeared to have been struck by Police gunfire. “On the passenger side, I just see in the mirror there, I just see he collecting shots on the ground, from the Police,” she said.
She added that the driver appeared to continue firing, making it difficult for Officers to approach that side of the vehicle.
As the shooting continued, however, the woman said she began sounding her horn in an effort to get the vehicle in front of her to move so she could escape the area. She was able to eventually manoeuvre around the vehicle blocking the road and passed the unmarked SUV near the bridge before continuing on her journey.
Investigations are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
