Police Officer Dies In Alleged Self-Inflicted Gunshot To Head In Sangre Grande; Another Officer Wounded
UPDATE: News of Joseph’s death sparked an outpouring of grief on social media, with friends and colleagues appealing for respect and sensitivity toward his family. One close friend urged members of the public to refrain from speculation as the family mourns.
In a WhatsApp group comprising of Police Officers, a message circulated which also called for prayers and support for Joseph’s relatives during what was described as a period of “unimaginable grief and loss.”

A Police Officer is dead and another wounded following a shooting incident at a property in Sangre Grande on Tuesday afternoon (16th June, 2026). The deceased has been identified as Corporal Johannes Joseph of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF). He died in a suspected suicide. The wounded Officer, who sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, has been identified as Police Constable St. Louis, also of the IATF.
Initial reports on social media and other platforms incorrectly stated that the shooting incident occurred at the Sangre Grande Police Station. Instead, investigators said the incident unfolded at an unfinished concrete structure belonging to Joseph, located along Madoosingh Drive, Bois Bande, Sangre Grande.
In a Media Release following the incident on Tuesday, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) said it is “deeply saddened by the unfortunate circumstances that resulted in the death of one of our Officers earlier today in the Sangre Grande district. The matter is now engaging the full attention of investigators in the Eastern Division. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Officer’s family, colleagues, and loved ones as they navigate this painful and unexpected loss.”
The TTPS added, “This tragic event is a solemn reminder that many among us; Officers and civilians alike, may be carrying heavy, unseen burdens. Anyone can feel overwhelmed, and no one should face those moments in isolation. We encourage individuals who may be struggling with personal, emotional, or situational pressures to reach out to someone they trust or seek professional support. Asking for help is an act of strength, not weakness.”
In responding to the situation, Commissioner of Police, Allister Guevarro, urged families, friends, neighbours, and colleagues to be attentive to the wellbeing of those around them. He added that, “Sudden changes in behaviour, withdrawal, expressions of distress, or signs that someone is not coping should never be ignored. A simple check‑in, a conversation, or an offer of support may help save a life.”
The TTPS said it “remains committed to fostering a culture of care, compassion, and support within the Service and across the national community. In moments of quiet struggle, empathy can be the bridge that keeps someone connected and safe.”
According to reports, Officers were alerted about several loud explosions heard along Madoosingh Drive, Bois Bande, Sangre Grande, around 1:54 PM on Tuesday (16th June, 2026). Upon arrival at the location, they discovered Corporal Joseph lying on the ground behind an unfinished concrete structure, with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head.
The injured Officer was rushed to the Sangre Grande Hospital, where he was examined by medical personnel and pronounced dead at 2:04 PM.
Investigators later spoke with PC St. Louis, who was receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to his right thigh. He reportedly told Officers that he had travelled to Sangre Grande to assist Corporal Joseph with tile work at the property.
According to the Officer, he encountered Corporal Joseph standing in a gallery area holding a firearm to his head and making certain remarks. He said Joseph then moved to the rear of the structure, where he followed and observed him sitting on a concrete block.
Moments later, Joseph allegedly pointed the firearm at his head and discharged a round. PC St. Louis reported feeling a burning sensation in his leg and realized he had been struck by what investigators believe may have been a stray projectile from the same gunshot.
The wounded Officer subsequently sought assistance and made his way to the Sangre Grande Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Police recovered firearms, ammunition and a handwritten note during the investigation.
Crime scene investigators also recovered several items of evidential value.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are being treated as a suspected suicide.
Authorities are also examining the contents of the note recovered at the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
Earlier this year, in February, an Officer allegedly jumped out of a window at the Sangre Grande Police Station. He was severely injured but survived.
