TWO (2) Men Shot Dead By Police In Maloney — Linked To Murder of Police Officer Romell Douglas
Reports state that two (2) men are dead following a Police-involved shooting incident in Maloney on Thursday morning (10th September, 2026). The deceased have been identified as 23-year-old Tyrique De Coteau and 19-year-old Tristan Martin. The men were said to be wanted by Police in connection with serious criminal offences.
De Coteau was reportedly wanted in connection with several robberies in the Northern Division, while Police described Martin as an alleged known gang member, linked to several firearm-related offences. Both men were also allegedly wanted in connection with the shooting death of 48-year-old Police Constable Romell Kerry Douglas in Caroni last month.
Douglas, who was assigned to the Four Roads Police Station, was shot dead shortly after 11:00 PM on 28th July, 2026, while sitting inside his white Nissan Tiida at the corner of Hydraulic Trace and Caroni South Bank Road, Kelly Village.
According to reports, Officers assigned to the Deputy Commissioner of Police - Operations carried out an operation in the Maloney district shortly after 5:30 AM on Thursday morning (10th September, 2026), to execute a Preventive Detention Order (PDO) in Martin’s name. However, Officers alleged they came under gunfire upon encountering De Coteau and Martin at a residence. Fearing for their lives, the Officers returned fire in the suspects’ direction, wounding both men in the process.
De Coteau and Martin were subsequently conveyed to the Arima General Hospital for emergency medical treatment. However, both men succumbed to their injuries a short time later.
Police reportedly recovered two (2) firearms at the scene of the incident. Several other individuals were also detained after they allegedly issued threats against the Officers at the location.
Members of the Guard and Emergency Branch (GEB) were contacted and riot-control measures implemented after the situation reportedly escalated. One of the detainees allegedly made racially-charged remarks during the incident, prompting the intervention of GEB personnel.
However, occupants of the house where the shooting occurred are disputing the account by Police of what transpired before the two (2) men were shot dead. According to a woman, Police broke down the door to the house with a pig-foot, even though the occupants allegedly told the Officers that they would open the door. She further alleged that it was clear that Police came to the property intending to kill the men. “They came to kill them,” she lamented.
The woman also alleged that all occupants of the house were ushered into the kitchen, but De Coteau and Martin were pulled back. She claimed both men were asked their names and, after responding, Police opened fire on them.
“All they supposed to be protecting the people...if something has happened, we’re not going to call the Police,” she said.
De Coteau was previously shot and wounded during a shooting incident on 14th May, 2026 along the Eastern Main Road, Arouca. A man was also wounded in that incident.
Another suspect linked to the investigation of PC Douglas’ murder, Hassan Johnson, also known as “H-Man”, was fatally shot during a Police confrontation at 7¾ Mile Mark, Mora Trace, Matura, in August. Police said a loaded Glock-26 was recovered at the scene.
Investigations are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the killing of De Coteau and Martin.
More on this as it becomes available.
